Hydrant Flow Testing Underway
Posted: Nov 05, 2018

PUC would like to advise customers in Manitou Park and Batchewana First Nation Rankin Reserve that crews will be in the area (November 6 - 9th) conducting hydrant flow tests. These tests are required under the Fire Code to determine how much water would be obtainable during a fire emergency. These flow tests determine the flow rate and water pressure at specific locations within PUC’s water distribution system.

During these test, there is a possibility a flow reversal could occur within the water distribution system. As a result, there is a chance customers in the area could experience discoloured water. This is because anytime there is a significant change in the rate or direction of flow of water in the distribution system, sediment in the watermains can be disturbed and carried along with the water.

In the event Customers notice that their water is discoloured, they should:

  • Turn on a cold-water tap (to keep the sediment out of the water heater) and let the water run for a maximum of 15 minutes.
  • It is best to use a bathtub tap or a basement laundry tub, as there is no screen to trap any sediment.
  • If the water does not clear up after 15 minutes of flushing, turn off your tap, wait 30 minutes, and try again. If the water does not clear up after two 15 minute flushing cycles, please call PUC Customer Care at 705-759-6522 Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 705-759-6555 at all other times.

Customers are asked to contact PUC Customer Care should they experience discoloured water or any unusual change in water quality.  PUC regrets any inconvenience these tests may cause, and wish to thank everyone for their understanding and cooperation.
