PUC Services Inc. (PUC) operates multiple utilities within and around the City of Sault Ste. Marie, including the supply, treatment and distribution of municipal drinking water, the supply of electricity, and the operation of wastewater treatment facilities.

PUC offers a dynamic, challenging and rewarding work environment that encourages collaboration and innovative thinking.  We are seeking a new member to join our Finance department. The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator, a problem solver and critical thinker with an innate desire to learn and grow.

Reporting to the Director, Finance, the Manager, Financial Reporting will lead activities such as general ledger accounting, financial planning and, analysis and audits.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and review the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements ensuring all transactions comply with all applicable legislation, Ontario Energy Board (OEB) Accounting Procedures, and International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) procedures, along with generally accepted accounting principles and Federal and Provincial Acts.
  • Prepare all assigned monthly journal entries, including calculating monthly unbilled revenue and distribution revenue estimates.
  • Complete month-end and year-end processing of general ledgers and financial statements, achieving an accurate, consistent and timely closing schedule.
  • Oversee other accounting functions, including, but not limited to, month end accruals, balance sheet reconciliations, etc.
  • Compile and analyze monthly internal financial results.
  • Develop and monitor business performance metrics.
  • Oversee preparation of annual operating budgets.
  • Complete and submit Statistics Canada surveys requiring accounting and/or financial information.
  • Coordinate and manage external audits.
  • Manage PILs and Income Tax processes.
  • Maintain integrity, accuracy, and consistency in financial transactions to ensure reporting precision.

Qualifications:

    • University degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, along with five years of audit experience.
    • Professional accounting designation:  CPA.
    • Demonstrated recent experience working with up-to-date standards in an audit environment.
    • Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
    • Well-developed analytical, organizational, technical and communication skills.
    • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications, including advanced skills in spreadsheet and financial accounting software.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Highly self-motivated and directed, and able to work with minimal supervision.
    • Demonstrates proven analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving abilities.
    • Obtains, maintains, and retains all required licenses, certificates and documents required of the position.
    • Develops and ensures the maintenance of policies, procedures, and processes to comply with regulatory and company requirements.
    • Interacts with the public, external agencies and authorities, suppliers, contractors, and staff in a manner that results in positive actions and outcomes.
