PUC Services Inc. operates multiple utilities within and around the City of Sault Ste. Marie, including the distribution of electricity, the supply, treatment and distribution of municipal drinking water, and the operation of wastewater treatment facilities.

Reporting to the Manager, Strategy and Brand, the Communications Coordinator Intern will provide support in various communication, marketing, and public engagement strategies.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with coordinating and managing PUC’s corporate social media and web platforms.
  • Draft and design marketing and communication materials for PUC brands (brochures, online content, etc.) to augment PUC’s presence in various markets.
  • Conduct market research to identify marketing and communication trends and opportunities for innovation.
  • Assist in designing and developing new marketing campaign concepts and subsequently implementing strategies.
  • Maintain media contact list and coordinate media monitoring efforts.
  • Maintain evaluation and measurement tools regarding communication activities.
  • Assist in the development of presentations and other documents.
  • Assist in the preparation of highly confidential material for the Board of Directors and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) including communications regarding business development, financials, etc.  and attend meetings of the Board of Directors as needed to ensure that governance activities are communicated as appropriate.
  • Assist with the organization of and attend events and other outreach activities.
  • Update company bulletin boards and other internal signage, as required.

Qualifications:

  • At minimum, completion of post-secondary education in Public Relations, Event Management, Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or related field.
  • Must meet the NOHFC eligibility criteria - candidate must be a new entrant into the workforce, transitioning to a new career, or unemployed or underemployed and entering a new field. Has not previously participated in an NOHFC funded internship.
  • Intermediate level in Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, with strong working knowledge of current social media tools and website CMS (content management systems).
  • Working knowledge of current public relations and communications strategies, including issues management, and media relations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in decisions regarding confidential matters.
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Exceptional communication abilities, both verbal and written.
  • Graphic design skills considered an asset.
  • Ability to foster a culture of safety.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Ontario driver's license
