SUPERVISOR, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT

PUC Services Inc. operates multiple utilities within and around the City of Sault Ste. Marie, including the supply, treatment and distribution of municipal drinking water, the supply of electricity, and the operation of wastewater treatment facilities. 

PUC Services is seeking a passionate safety minded professional to lead and shape our health and safety program. The ideal candidate will continue to promote and ingrain a safety conscious culture to ensure every employee goes home safe. The responsibilities of the Supervisor, Safety & Environment include:

  • Lead the development and implementation of effective Health and Safety training programs for all business operations.
  • Remain up to date on current industry standards and best practices to ensure corporate compliance with applicable legislation and the maintenance of corporate records.
  • Develop the corporate loss control program including Environmental Liability Management to prevent and reduce the loss evolving from accidents and injuries at PUC.
  • Oversee the accident/incident investigation process to diagnose incident root causes and assist in the implementation of action and prevention plans.
  • Focus on injury prevention utilizing Hazard Identification and Risk Management techniques through collection and analysis of data.
  • Assist in the development of corporate policies related to Health and Safety.
  • Provide health and safety, environment program audits.

 Qualifications:

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in business or a related field.
  • Professional designation or certification as a safety professional is an asset.
  • A minimum of five years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in the health and safety and environment field. (Preferably in a utility environment)
  • Experience in developing and delivering training programs, and the ability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings as well as working knowledge of fire suppression systems, the Ontario Building Code, Technical Standards and Safety Authority regulations and Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
  • In-depth knowledge of hazard identification and risk assessment process is a requirement.
  • Working knowledge of water and electrical utility industry inclusive of all related codes and regulations.
  • Must be highly self-motivated, directed, and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpretive and analytical skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access and Microsoft Project.
