Valve & Valve Maintenance

Valves

With over 4200 valves in the Sault Ste. Marie Water Distribution System, valve operation is very important should the need arise to close or isolate a street in case of a water main break or other events. It is best practice to exercise each valve regularly to ensure they are accessible and remain operable. Critical valves should be exercised more frequency than others.

However in some situations the operation of valves can cause sudden flow changes that disturb sediments and encrustations that may adversely affect water quality. Consumers need not be alarmed. The water is and will remain safe for consumption at all times. Anyone that does draw discoloured water is requested to flush their cold water faucet (preferably from a laundry or bath tub without screen or filter) for 5 to 10 minutes or until it runs clear before calling PUC Services.

Do not run the hot water, in order to avoid filling your hot water tank with discoloured water.

If the water does not clear up after at least 15 minutes of flushing, please call PUC Customer Care at 705-759-6522 Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 16:30 and 705-759-6555 at all other times.

Curb Box

A curb box is a 25mm (1”) diameter black iron pipe topped with a 75 mm (3") diameter iron cap with a “WATER” inscription on it. This curb box is normally located in front of your property either in your lawn or in your driveway. At some locations, one may find these curb boxes in the rear yard of their property.

The curb box is an access point to the water valve, which allows PUC Services to shut off the water to your residence should the need arise to make repairs to the plumbing system in your house. This curb box must be made accessible and be operable at all times for this main reason.

If you are planning to have any of the following work completed, please contact Customer Care 705-759-6522 for a locate, and allow our staff to check the operational function of this curb box.

  • internal plumbing repairs requiring the water to be shut off at property line,
  • construct / re-construct a driveway or sidewalk
  • landscaping around your property

This will to ensure the curb box and shut-off valve are in proper working order prior to starting your work.

Also, if the curb box is elevated above grade, creating a tripping hazard, please notify Customer Care 705-759-6522 and PUC will lower it at no cost.
